Campground Masterplan and Facilities

pICKEREL LAKE, MICHIGAN

It has been more than twenty years since finishing graduate school and over thirty since my first drafting class. I’m not nearly finished but I’ve done enough to start thinking. I’ve had the privilege and good fortune to work with several influential and patient mentors and immensely talented colleagues on big projects with huge budgets. Important work which will impact the lives of countless individuals. And now I am lucky enough to live and work on luxury homes located on some of the most stunning sites you can imagine.

And yet I keep returning to this humble little 950 square foot restroom and shower facility, located in a small county owned campground. A project few people will every visit and which most people will never see. A project I designed and managed shortly after starting my firm. A project where not much was expected and which an average or expected solution would have been just fine. (Reproduce what’s already there and move on to the next commission.) Or try harder. Do the best you can even if few people will notice. Do the best you can because you know you are capable of more. Do the best you can because architecture isn’t just a job.

Do the best you can on every commission, on every project, ESPECIALLY the ones where no one is watching and where not much is expected.

A little reminder to myself about why I do what I do. Why most architects do what we do. Get up, go to work and try to make something just a little bit better.
