House #90

harbor springs, michigan

When creating architecture in a location at stunning as Northern Michigan often the best solution is for the architecture to be quiet…simple…restrained.

That’s not the same as lacking courage or the confidence to be original, but it’s an understanding that the site and surroundings are almost always the lead character.

Keep the building quiet. Don’t scream for attention. Let it become a simple backdrop to the turquoise hues of Lake Michigan the dark green pines of a dense forest, or in fall, a simple white canvas to highlight the countless shades of red, orange and yellow leaves which mark the end of another Northern Michigan summer.

House90…Our modern reinterpretation of the classic in-town Harbor Springs summer home. Two simple white masses with oversized punched window openings, connected by a two-story glass “gasket” which both visually and physically connects the public lakeside courtyard with the private wooded courtyard beyond.

Completed Summer 2024.
